A woman who was trapped in a pit on her Powys border property for two days had to be freed by rescue teams.

Police and members of the Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team rescued the 70-year-old woman woman, who lives at a remote property in Pennal near Machynlleth on the Powys border after she fell into a vehicle inspection pit in on of her out buildings.

Police were called to the property on Thursday (April 22) after relatives contacted them after they couldn’t get in touch with her.

When an officer arrived at the property they noticed a set of keys in the out building and had a look inside to find the woman trapped in the pit.

Members of the police, Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team and the Welsh Ambulance Service then came to retrieve the woman who was not badly injured and found to be “cold and dehydrated”.

A spokesperson for the Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team said: “At around 2pm, call-handlers from the Team were made aware of a 70 year-old woman trapped in an outbuilding in a remote property near Pennal.

“The woman had fallen through the floor covering an old vehicle inspection pit some 48 hours earlier and was unable to escape.

“Following up on welfare concerns raised by family members unable to contact the woman, a Police Officer visited the property, and noticed a set of keys hanging from the garage door. Investigating further, he located the woman trapped in the pit.

“Team volunteers along with Police Officers and a Welsh Ambulance Service crew attended the incident, and, armed with a ladder, were able to assist the woman out. She was assessed by the WAST crew and found to be cold and dehydrated but otherwise in reasonable shape considering her ordeal.”
